Greetings and welcome to our 40 LED TV website. The idea behind this site was to provide you with all the information we could dig up regarding every brand and model of 40 inch LED TV. At the time of this writing, there aren’t that many, but we’ll cover all the ones that are out there now, and as more become available, we’ll tell you all about them.

First of all, however, we should probably clear up a little of the terminology being used. Most manufacturers call these televisions ‘LED TVs’. However, that’s probably not the most accurate description. While they do contain light emitting diodes or LEDs, they are still basically an LCD set. They still use LCD (liquid crystal display) screens, just as LCD TVs have done for the past decade. While there are actual LED displays, they’re really not used for TVs yet, with the exception of Sony’s OLED (organic light emitting diode) set, which at a whopping size of 11 – yes, eleven – inches costs about $2500.

The difference between a regular LCD set and these new LED TVs is in what they use to light the screen. Conventional LCD TVs use CCFLs (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) to light the screen. LED LCD televisions use LEDs instead. These can be either ‘edge-lit’ (the LEDs are positioned around the perimiter of the screen) or ‘backlit’ (the LEDs go across the entire back of the screen). Both types have their advantages.

Edge-lit LED screens can be made extremely thin, and backlit LED screens have better color control and blacker blacks than regular LCDs. Usually LCDs can’t go any blacker than a dark grey, but the small size of LEDs allows for what’s called local dimming, allowing one part of the screen to be made very dark – although not down to the pixel level as with plasma, which is the reason that plasma usually affords excellent black reproduction.

Every HD LED TV is very energy efficient, due to the advantage LED bulbs have over CCFLs in power usage. Other environmental advantages to the LED sets are that they use less raw materials due to their thinner profile, and that they contain no mercury (CCFLs do have a small amount).

The 40 inch LED TV is a size that really falls into the sweet spot of being small enough to fit in most locations, yet large enough to wow viewers with its picture. So we’re happy to bring you all the latest regarding the 40 LED TV.
